"The Enchanted Nutcracker and the Kingdom of Dolls."
Fantasy, figurative art creations by Anya Anderson.
The theme for my art show is inspired by the timeless Christmas tradition of the Nutcracker story. Growing up in the same Russian region where Tchaikovsky lived, I was immersed in the Nutcracker ballet, whether at the local theater or on TV. However, I always sensed something deeper, a more eerie and intricate tale beneath the surface.
When I later read the original story by E.T.A. Hoffmann, I was captivated by its complexity and spookiness. Hoffmann was a multifaceted artist. He wrote stories that teetered between fantasy and reality, composed music, and created visual art. His version of the Nutcracker is far more haunting than the popularized ballet, which was softened by Alexandre Dumas before Tchaikovsky's music turned it into a beloved holiday tradition.
In Hoffmann's tale, Marie's love for the Nutcracker doll leads her into a dreamlike world filled with deception and danger. Ultimately, she marries the Nutcracker and leaves her real life to live forever in the doll kingdom. This story of a girl vanishing into her imaginary world resonates deeply with me as a doll maker and artist.
I tried to bring some of the Nutcracker characters to life in their doll forms, capturing the pivotal moments of Hoffmann's original narrative. I hope you to experience a blend of whimsy and mystery, stepping into a world where fantasy and reality blur, just as Hoffmann intended. I hope you join me in exploring this enchanting and eerie story through the art of dolls, and feel the emotions that inspired this collection.
Anya Anderson was born in Russia with a lifelong attraction to visual arts. After training in art studio and art school, she began making dolls in 2014. Her favorite material is Paperclay, a material that allows her to combine a love of sculpture and painting in her art. “Dolls for me are not toys,” says Anderson. “I imagine they are all part of a little theater, poetry, and three-dimensional painting at your house in an intimate setting.”
Anderson is a member and on display at Art Source Gallery, 1516 W Grove St., Boise, ID. More of her work is online at AnyaAndersonArtDolls.com.

“Trees and Water” The essence of life I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed Against the earth's sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray. Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only god can make a tree Joyce Kilmer Linda Heune-Solomon is a true mountain woman, inspired by the varied landscape in all seasons. The majesty of jagged cliffs, the beauty of rolling hills as they change colors throughout the day, and "the trees". The varied species blend together as the wind moves through making an ever-changing kaleidoscope of color and shadows. Trees provide the very air we breathe. "Water" in all its fascinating forms without which, in three days, we die. Waterfalls, no two are the same and each changes its form every instant. Streams, rivers, lakes and oceans, each one unique and ever-changing. "Capturing these two essentials for life have been my challenge and my love for more years than I can count, ever falling short." "Human art invariably fails to match the beauty and majesty of nature." Joyce Kilmer Linda’s professional art career began as a Scrimshander, etching pistol grips, knife handles, and various jewelry pieces, Taught by and working with her father, Benno Heune, a gun engraver, This involved her other love, animals, almost all species, designing bolo ties, belt buckles, and many kinds of art pieces for the Safari Club, Ducks Unlimited, and wildlife enthusiasts. In later years she owned a retail store in Twain Harte CA making hand painted and appliquéd clothing and other fiber art including spinning and weaving. After retirement she moved to Rio Vista CA and was involved with a nonprofit organization focused on city improvement and became the artist in residence for Rio Vista and spearheaded the painting of three murals, and a metal installation. Linda founded and was head curator of the RioVision Art Gallery for several years before moving to Idaho in 2020. Joining Art Source Gallery has kept her involved in the art world while trying to find more time to travel the world in search of even more inspiration.

Friedrich Nietzche famously said "We have art so that we shall not die from reality."
For some artists, transforming the horrors that haunt their anxious minds into beautiful, thought provoking and enjoyable artwork is not only essential for their own well being, but it re-tells those unfortunate stories to the world in a much more palatable way.

Gesture is the essence or characteristic of what you are seeing and experiencing informed, in part, by your awareness of its occurrence. Gesture resides in the movement of surf against rocks, clouds in the wind, thereach of a tree branch, the slope of a hillside, the patterns of a nubula, erosion on a stone, the cycle of migrations, the path of lightning in a thunderstorm, and the curls of subatomic particles in the Large Hadron Collider.
Physics is the study of the structure, properties, and interactions between matter and energy; basically, thestudy of the behavior of life, the universe, and everything. Ecology is the study of the relationships ofliving things between each other and their physical environment. Everything we know that exists iscomprised of matter and energy interacting with other matter and energy and its environment, from the infinitesimally large universal scale to the infinitesimally small quantum realm. It has been known for millennia by indigenous peoples and, relatively more recently by scientists and philosophers, that everything is connected. Nothing in the known universe exists or operates independently.
The interactions of matter and energy form visible and measurable patters. Some patterns, like animal migrations, repeat themselves, while others, like the movement of water droplets on a hot skillet, are noticeably random.Wu Li, a Chinese term describing the concepts of physics, translates to mean Patterns of Organic Energy.
As a wildlife biologist, ecologist, and artist, this concept resonates deeply with me. My artistic interpretation of Wu Li incorporates the interconnected concepts of physics, ecology, and gesture. In this show, and in much of my work, I express the gesture of Wu Li through my understanding of and experiences with my environment.

When a potter and a printmaker collaborate, they would create a harmonious exchange of ideas, each influencing and complementing the other's work, resulting in a unique artistic expression. This collaboration of these very divergent artistic mediums will be featured during the month of April 2024 at Art Source Gallery. Gallery members Genie Sue Weppner, a potter specializing in Raku style, and Laurel Macdonald, an oil painter and linocut printmaker, have melded their distinctive styles into each other’s mediums, creating explosions of color and texture rarely seen together. "It's such an honor to be using Genie Sue's vessels in my artwork," said Macdonald of her upcoming display. "I love her vases and mugs and have had such a fun time imagining them in different scenarios!" “Laurel's prints are full of color which are defined by strong black lines, a design technique that I try to use in my Raku work,” Weppner said. “I always tried to imagine what it would look like if I could replicate her work on a Raku pot. I’m so grateful that she agreed to this collaboration so we could play with each other's imagery.” Potter Genie Sue Weppner is a long-time artistic potter who is currently exploring Raku firing techniques at her Boise studio. The Raku technique is essentially when glazed ceramics are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and are then placed in a material that would be able to catch fire, such as sawdust or newspaper. This technique is used to starve the piece of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colors within the glaze. Printmaker Laurel Macdonald explores printmaking and linocuts in creating images that depict beautiful Idaho landscapes and activities. Her colorful prints are filled with energy and playfulness. As a longtime Treasure Valley artist, her work is featured in local galleries and collections as well as adorning several public spaces throughout Boise and Meridian. Join the artists at the First Thursday Opening Reception, Thursday April 4, 2024 from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. Enjoy the live music of Old Thyme. Wine and snacks are available. The exhibition will be on display at the gallery, 1516 W Grove St. (Linen District) Boise, ID 83843. More information is available at the gallery website: www.artsourcegallery.com.

The Life and Art of Zella Bardsley
Zella Bardsley
Feb. 9, 1962 - Oct. 16, 2023
To honor the life, inspiration and memory of Zella Bardsley, Art Source Gallery is hosting a fundraiser for the WCA during the month of February 2024. Some of Zella’s remaining mixed-medium works will be on sale with proceeds donated to the WCA .
Bardsley was among the earliest members of Art Source Gallery, serving as president of the association three different times and other leadership positions, over her 30 years of membership. Her artwork featured mixed media and found items that she crafted into unique designs and themes. Bardsley showed her work at Art Source Gallery, and other galleries throughout Idaho and the Pacific Northwest.
A force for good, creativity, inclusivity, and love, Zella adored her community and worked throughout her life to make Boise more supportive to artists, musicians, and educators. A special reception will be held on First Thursday, February 1 to honor her work and life. Proceeds from those sales, and additional artwork donated by Art Source Gallery members, will benefit the WCA in Boise.
Since 1910, the WCA has provided safe housing for women in Boise, Idaho. However, in the last 40 years, the focus has been narrowed to provide shelter and supportive services to individuals impacted by domestic violence and/or sexual assault. These services are provided at no-cost, and span a four-county service area representing 30 percent of the population of the state of Idaho.
You are invited to join gallery members and artists from throughout Boise in remembering Zella at a First Thursday opening reception at Art Source Gallery, 1516 W Grove Street, February 1, 2024, 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm. Enjoy snacks, wine and music by Wayne White.
