Illusions - Photography by Amy McRae
In May 2025, Art Source Gallery is featuring new works from Amy McRae, a Boise-based photographer and gallery member. Inspired by newly learned techniques in holographic and agamographic art. McRae creates optical illusions that let the viewer see images that change with their viewing angle and perspective.
“Illusions trick us into perceiving something differently than it actually exists,” said McRae. “Illusions in artwork create a sense of depth, movement or hidden images. My hope for this show is that it will make you take a step back and say “what did I just see”. My goal for the show is for the viewer to just have fun”.
McRae is a Boise-based photographer and long-time member of Art Source Gallery. More information is available at www.AmyMcRaePhotography.com
Join us for First Thursday on May 1st, from 5-9 PM, to meet the artist and learn about her process and inspirations. The show will be on display throughout May—don’t miss it!

Art Source Gallery is hosting Art to the Rescue, an exhibition featuring various media to support Freedom Bounds Hounds, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving dogs from the streets and high-kill shelters and helping them find their forever homes. The exhibit will be open to the public throughout February 2025 with the opening reception First Thursday, February 6, from 5:00 – 9:00 pm. A major portion of the event’s sales will be donated to Freedom Bound Hounds.
Art Source Gallery has extended an open invitation to all Treasure Valley artists to showcase their creativity in both two and three-dimensional art across any medium. With no entry fee, this is a fantastic opportunity for artists to contribute to a noble cause. Throughout the exhibit, you’ll find unique pieces created and donated by Art Source Gallery members, marked with green dots for easy identification.
Adding a heartwarming touch local first-grade artists are showing commissioned dog portraits for patrons who had donated at least $50 and provided photos of a dog in their life. From the submitted photos, these young artists ccreated watercolor interpreteations that will be framed and debut at the February 6th First Thursdayu. The young artists are excited to bring furry friends to life in watercolor while supporting a great cause!
Jenny Telford Carlisle, Freedom Bound Hounds co-founder, describes the great need the group fills in our community. "The dogs that we help come from the streets and have no one, they are treated like pests, intentionally hit by cars, sick, and hungry. People see these dogs every day and do absolutely nothing. It's heartbreaking, especially once they get here and you look into their eyes- so full of love, acceptance, forgiveness, and eagerness to just be the best pup they can be." Freedom Bound Hounds matches these needy pups with owners who want to give them a forever home.
As an artist owned gallery, it hosts benefit exhibits several times each year to support local non-profit organizations.
A public reception for the artists and their work will be on February First Thursday, February 6, 2025, 5:00 - 9:00 PM at the gallery. Live music and snacks will be provided. Wine is available.

Show Description
"In my work, which is mostly abstract in nature, I use contrasts to create interest and to try to get the observer to interact with and enjoy the richness that this creates", says fiber artist Betty Hayzlett of her November show at Art Source Gallery. "Although I have used other materials such as wood, from rough slabs and smooth carvings, to twigs of all sizes, it is only in the last three years that I have turned my hands to ceramics to help create contrast". All of the ceramic pieces of the show are designed to be combined with felted elements. As her ceramic work has evolved, so has the excitement of challenging herself to create felted elements that both complement and enrich the ceramic pieces to create a unified work of art. Hayzlett has tried to keep the rich colors and organic shapes that have been characteristic of her work, even as pattern has become a stronger element. This show, "Unexpected Harmony", focuses on art works that use the fusion, or combination, of these various elements.
Bio
Betty Hayzlett has been creating with fabric since she was a little girl when a friend’s mom showed her how to make her own doll clothes.
Betty started working more seriously with fiber in college when she created a final work using fabric over a metal armature. A weaving class some years later showed her the excitement that can be created when a variety of richly colored fibers are woven together to create that surface fabric. Betty quickly realized that the straight lines of loom-woven fabric didn’t do enough to address her love of three-dimensional and organic forms, so for years she wove on three-dimensional structures that she welded. A decade or so later, taking a felting class opened up new options for her work. Since then, Betty has been experimenting with felting, other fiber techniques, and other materials that she combines to create the kinds of forms that she loves. Three years ago, she took a ceramic workshop from Genie Sue Weppner, learning techniques that she had never used in college, but which opened up new opportunities for her to combine felting with another medium. Betty thinks of this show as highlighting just the beginning of that exciting exploration.
Artist Statement
I create art to make things of beauty, things that will visually improve our surroundings. I love organic forms and rich colors. I prefer three-dimensional forms, so that even the items that I make to hang on a wall, tend to be richly textured and more deep than flat. I love playing with contrasts: light and dark, matte and shiny, smooth and rough, hard and soft. I don’t think of anything being out of bounds. Any material or technique that might create a look that could create beauty or interest is acceptable.
Everyone is invited to experience "Unexpected Harmony" at the First Thursday opening reception November 7, 2024 from 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Art Source Gallery, 1516 W Grove St., Boise, ID. The reception will feature a chance to meet the artist, enjoy live music as well as snacks and wine. The exhibit will be viewable through November 27, 2024.
