David R. Day
The Western Wanderer
David R. Day wanders the west photographing everything from the grand vistas of Idaho's Teton and Sawtooth Mountains to faded signs, lonely highways and unique landmarks throughout the West.
David will display his new work at Art Source Gallery for the month of January. His show, “The Western Wanderer,” strives to present the American West as it is, was, and always will be.
Day’s love of photography traces into his school years as he took pictures for his high school yearbook, then portraits for friends and business colleagues. After studying photography in college his skills led to creating images for album covers and magazines. A Boise area native, his passion has become his career as a photographer, writer and documenter of life in the West.

Rena Vandewater - The Color of Harmony
What Color is Harmony? This is a question Rena Vandewater asks herself each time she begins a new oil painting. She creates harmony using vivid color, three dimensional pattern and repetitive texture. Rena’s paintings radiate with bright colors, charm, and fantasy. Her work creates a beautiful and bountiful world.“I want my work to produce wonder and new impressions. I want my viewer to pay close attention and take time to really look, to sense something new or unexpected they have not witnessed before in art or in the world.”
Rena Vandewater began her painting career as a self-taught artist painting farms and landscapes, her life at the time. Rena’s early works explored her love of the medium and were full of wonder. After her children were grown, she began working on a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting. Influenced by Post-Modernism her work became didactic.
Her graduate thesis was titled “Signs, Symbols and Women” and dealt with issues of equality, environmental concerns, and religion. After ten years of trying to change the world through her painting, Rena returned to her earlier positive approach. Helen Keller once said, "No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars or sailed to an uncharted land or opened a new heaven to the human spirit." And Albert Einstein said, "The gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge."
Rena has created hundreds of canvasses over the last 50 years. She is included in many public and private collections across the United States and Europe. In her most recent work, Rena uses the oil color medium to create fresh and colorful painting. Rena often thinks of Grant Wood and his happy contribution to the world during the depression years. “It is my current belief that there is so much war, fear and uncertainty in our lives, I have no desire to add to it with bleak or didactic paintings. My work is harmonious and uplifting while having a strong presence of atmosphere and intensity.”
Rena Vandewater’s work will be on display November 2 through November 30 at Art Source Gallery, 1516 West Grove Street, Boise. The public is invited to meet Rena at the opening reception, Thursday, November 2, 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. This free event features live music, food and libations.

Featured Artist: Bruce Tarbet
"The Studio Works" presentation is an exploration of studio lighting and techniques by photographer Bruce Tarbet. “Nearly all of my work is shot in natural light, with landscape and outdoor settings being most prominent. My home in Boise offered a space for an interior studio where I could control lighting and experiment over many sessions,” said Tarbet. “My work has always leaned into hard shadows and high contrast. This series amplifies those qualities.”
Many of the images feature innovative flash units work as well as multi-layered and manipulated images. Selected images include the photographic addition of handset type from an antique newspaper typecase.
Bruce Tarbet is a Boise-based photographer who creates bold, dramatic forms to create graphic, emotional and playful images. He’s intrigued by patterns of color, shape and light: sun rays through a thicket of willows; cathedrals reflected in puddles; the weather-bleached limbs of a downed pine. His interest in photography began during high school with film cameras and processing, and continues today with his transition to digital cameras and technology. His life experience has been shaped by being a husband, father of two sons and careers in publishing, sales and event advertising. He enjoys traveling the world, is active in the outdoors as a hiker, photographer and flyfisher.

“A Tribute to Trees” by Margaret Donat—June Featured Artist at Art SourceGallery
Kiln-formed glass artist Margaret Donat shares her fascination with trees—their lively way of conversing, dancing, holding each other up—and their constant change.
Weather, light, and seasons all bring new visual surprises, she says, adding, “I especially like deciduous trees in winter when they expose their underlying structure, allowing me an intimate look at ‘bones’ beneath the foliage. I began this show in winter and finished in the spring when the trees were budding and coming to life.”
Donat builds on her experience with watercolor—she creates an underpainting on glass, then adds layers of relief, firing one at a time and adjusting the heat for different effects. Like the trees she loves, her work is constantly changing.
The exhibition will be on display throughout the month of June. Meet the artist at Art Source Gallery on First Thursday, June 1, 2023. Enjoy music by Scott Pietsch, seasonal snacks, and wine by Indian Creek Winery from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

Art Source Gallery is featuring the work of Beth Trott in her series "Walk the Lines".
About the Exhibit: “Walk The Lines”
When I first moved to Boise I walked the paths and trails around my SE neighborhood everyday taking in the natural beauty of this Idaho space. I would constantly notice the power lines, so stark against the landscape. Truthfully, I often found them to be distracting, impeding my view of the stunning Idaho skies and landscapes in all of their marvelous beauty.
As time passed and I continued to walk, the lines began to blend into the background. I no longer found them distracting, honestly I no longer even noticed them.
Then one day in late 2021, I found myself marveling at one of Idaho's many awe inspiring skyscapes when suddenly I saw both the lines and the sky clearly as one. Towering man-made structures and breathtaking natural beauty blended together in a visual balancing act. Both were such impactful images, so different but coexisting as one in that moment. It was like a visual metaphor for the life we live in The West; These lines, which may sometimes obstruct our view, are the reason we are able to enjoy life and thrive in this beautiful, rugged place.
I went home and started painting…
My intention for the “Walk The Lines” series is to translate the beauty I saw on that day into watercolor, often tapping into how I felt when the lines and the landscape became one and the same for me. I continue to walk the lines around my neighborhood, my city and my state, always finding great joy and artistic opportunity in those moments when the two blend seamlessly.
About the Artist:
I am a Fine Artist and Illustrator living and working in Boise, Idaho. I have been exploring a series that tells the visual story of the interaction between Idaho’s natural spaces and its industry. Specifically, I am creating a series of watercolor paintings that feature Idaho’s beautiful lands and skies in juxtaposition with the power lines that allow life in the west to thrive. This show is sponsored in part by Idaho Power, for which I am incredibly grateful!
