Larry Balsan

A resident of Idaho since 1988, I was employed by Micron as a semiconductor layout designer for 28 years. Now retired, I am able to concentrate on an art form that I began back in high school. Growing up in the psychedelic 60’s, I was fascinated by the Spirograph toy of yesteryear.

I was inspired by string art kits that depicted owls and sailing ships, where they would run string between nails to make the pictures. I took aspects from both of those and other geometric visual type toys eventually coming up with my own take on string art pictures. First, I take a white illustration board and design patterns of lines.

On those lines, I mark where to punchholes through the board. All work is done by hand using old fashion drafting tools such astriangles and engineering rulers. No computers or technical aids are used at any stage ofdesign or in color choices. During the design phase, maintaining a symmetrical design is veryimportant because if any measurement is off, it becomes apparent when the art piece iscomplete. Because of this approach, all pieces are unique and “one of a kind”.
